Queer Eyes For The Privileged Eye. Skip to primary content. Skip to secondary content. Newer posts →. What Would Queer Sex-Ed Look Like? June 22, 2014. After exploring the reasons why. We have never heard about queer sex-ed in our schools in last week’s post, it’s time to imagine what queer sex education would look like. And to imagine what queer sex-ed would look like, we need to keep in mind these four fundamental things as the foundation for our new sex-ed:. Gender Is Not Binary, Gender Is A Spectrum:.

Queer Eyes For The Privileged Eye. Skip to primary content. Inside Out of My Head: What I Learned From Pixar’s Latest Film. August 8, 2015. There are so many preconceptions about feelings and emotions we do not challenge that we usually have a one-sided (very biased) view on them. This view is very patronising and is fed to us by our families, society, self-help books, different styles of therapies, and so on. We have been conditioned to think that happiness. Be there. Unlike self-help books and some...

Hair Straighteners on the Train A Perfect Politics? August 7, 2015. August 7, 2015. 8216;I straighten my hair, and take trains’. This post is inspired by 2 things 1) I’ve just been reading Angela McRobbie’s excellent commentary. On the ‘perfect’ and the workings of competitive femininity in neoliberal times, and, 2) once seeing a woman straightening her hair on a train. As Angela McRobbie recounts in her example regarding women ‘making up’ themselves on public transport:. Rage against the sex machine.

Hot-housed academic flowers and imposter syndrome. July 31, 2015. And loss of skin pigment. I also accept that worrying about not having something to do because you’re about to start a big fun project in September (woohoo! Is akin to a spoilt child being given an endless bag of Maltesers with the nutritional value of kale. And, yet the imperative to do something persists. We know that imposter syndrome is bullshit, yet my sense from talking to colleagues is that it still persists. Enter your comment here.

Doing a PhD (and the aftermath): a survivor’s story. August 18, 2015. August 20, 2015. The year is very possibly 2000. I have fallen in love etc etc. I have no idea what to do with my PhD. My supervisors are helpful and engaged; they spend hours trying to help me to craft my ideas. I have no ideas, so instead I spend hours trying to craft other people’s ideas. I make their words into my words, and smoke. The year is in all likelihood 2005. I have got an academic job. *dry-heaving sobs of panic*. Popular ...

Making sandwiches in academia. June 25, 2015. June 25, 2015. The phrase ‘Make me a sandwich’, which distills the age-old sexist stereotype that women belong in the kitchen, is something that I have found myself increasingly thinking about in the context of academia. More specifically, I have found myself thinking about where, in academia, the kitchen might lie, and who might be expected to be in it? 8211; then what does this mean for the constitution of labour in academia? So, where to go from here?

Rage against the sex machine. August 6, 2015. March 9, 2016. Ok, so I’m really finding it hard to keep the rage in right now. The source of my rage? That age-old sexist stereotypes just keep burning on in the fire of debates about the sex industry. Every time we think there might be a chance – just a chance – we can snuff some of them out … Nope! Someone’s just put some gasoline on it! And so it goes on, and on, and on. The ones that depict women as sexual objects, and men as sexual subjects? Are we left...

Selfishness versus selflessness: nurturing and the gendered self. July 20, 2015. July 20, 2015. This way of thinking is. For if you give entirely of yourself to all those who demand or require it, what do you have left? In a very real way, women have needed to ‘suffer’ increasingly over the last few decades. As the male-breadwinner model succumbed to the expectations of two-partner incomes in late capitalism ( Elisabeth Warren’s book. What is it giving. When I really think about it, a lot of the women I ...

Queering the Nerd | A grad student takes on queerness and their mid-20s.
A grad student takes on queerness and their mid-20s. About this queer nerd. Well, I made my own deodorant. August 17, 2015. In the latest installment of my being a huge hippie… I also made my own deodorant. Does it really cause alzheimers? I’m a skeptical, moderate hippie. It actually works really well, lasts through workouts and stuff, and smells nice: my first great experience with aluminum-free deodorant! I was super excited. BUT… it comes in a jar with a little spready scooper thing, so app...10 drop...

QUEER INK
Easy Like a Sunday Roundup. Last year, the blog Pervocracy posted a piece called ‘The Sexcalator’. I first saw a therapist when I was 17. ‘Progress’ in bed had stopped suddenly, and I could see nothing in the media telling me that perhaps that wasn’t an issue. I assumed, then, that it was. Asks me to love my vagina and the things I can put into it as if penetration were an integral part of being a woman. I just don’t think it is, and the only place from which I’ve heard voices back me up ...Now that repr...

There's a Queer in My Beer
There's a Queer in My Beer. Wednesday, May 12, 2010. Get him to show you the paper. ANYWAY- My personal favorite feature of his supporting materials is the 1988 film directed by British filmmaker, Isaac Julien. Julien stirs together the look of Art Deco Harlem in smoky nightclubs of the period such as the Savoy Ballroom or Cotton Club, with some musical sampling from late 1980s vogue club tracks. Beautiful. Its also heavily influenced, I think, by Pink Narcissus. Is that still a thing? Queer In My Beer.
